The ideal soil is rich in humus, which can hold water well but does not tend to become waterlogged. Unsuitable, on the other hand, are very sandy and very heavy clay-rich or compacted soils. The sugar snap pea has hardly any special site requirements: deep soil in a sunny, airy location already provides the best conditions. In your own garden cultivation is also easily feasible with a little background knowledge. In the meantime, however, the vegetable is also grown commercially in some areas with deep and nutrient-rich soils. When growing vining varieties I usually grown wide rows on either side of my trellis so as they grow I can help attach them to the trellis with twine. Pea inoculant is a beneficial bacterium that can help the pea plants grow more vigorously and increase pod production. You can dust your sugar snap pea seeds with pea inoculant. Plant your sugar snap peas as soon as the ground has thawed and after your last frost date in the spring. Sugar snap peas will slow their growth and production if temperatures are consistently above 70 degrees. Depending on your growing season, if it is not too hot in early fall you might also be able to fit in a fall crop of sugar snap peas. Peas are typically an early spring crop because they do not like the hot weather.
